Best snorkeling in Key West

The best snorkeling near Key West is on the reef, about 7 miles out, and the only way there is by boat. Here is what each reef is like, and which boats on this site go there.

Honest note on the coral. Very hot water in the summer of 2023 caused widespread coral bleaching and death in the Florida Keys. The government's own reef pages warn that older descriptions of coral cover may no longer be accurate. You will still see fish, sea fans and reef structure, but expect less live coral than old photos show.

Most boats do not promise one reef. Captains pick the calmest reef on the day. Fury, Sebago and Sunset Watersports only say "the reef". Snuba names the reefs it rotates between.

Sand Key

About 7 miles west of Key West, marked by a red iron lighthouse finished in 1853. Ridges of coral sit 5 to 20 feet deep, with sandy grooves between them. Watch for fire coral, which stings. Visibility changes a lot: anywhere from 15 to 110 feet, depending on wind and waves.

Boats that list it: Snuba of Key West. The big catamarans (Fury, Sebago, Sunset Watersports) pick a reef on the day. Compare reef trips.

Rock Key

About 1 mile east of the Sand Key light. Depths run from 5 to 35 feet, with long fingers of coral and sandy canyons.

Boats that list it: Snuba of Key West.

Eastern Dry Rocks

A small reef (90 acres), 5 to 35 feet deep, with long fingers of coral and coral-filled canyons. It is one of seven reefs in the government's "Mission: Iconic Reefs" restoration program.

Boats that list it: Snuba of Key West.

Western Sambo

Off Boca Chica, east of Key West. It has the widest mix of reef habitat in the Lower Keys, and one of the last stands of living elkhorn coral there. It is an ecological reserve, so no fishing or collecting.

Boats that list it: Snuba of Key West, and Danger Charters' reef trip from Stock Island.

Looe Key

One of the best-known reefs in the Keys, but it is not near Key West. It sits about 6.3 miles south of Ramrod Key, so trips leave from the Big Pine Key area, about 30 miles up the road. Expect parrotfish, surgeonfish, barracuda, grunts, butterflyfish and angelfish.

Looe Key trips leave from the Big Pine Key area, not Key West. For a Key West trip, compare reef trips here.

Calm water instead: the backcountry

Not every snorkel trip goes to the reef. Backcountry trips stay in the shallow, sheltered water of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, closer to shore. The water is calmer, which suits kids and weak swimmers.

Boats that go there: Danger Charters (schooner, snorkel and kayak), Honest Eco (small groups), and Fury's dolphin and snorkel trip.
